Nikola Tesla Once Fired His Secretary for Being Fat

Written by Ryan Prost

Tesla once fired his secretary for being fat. Nikola Tesla was born July 10, 1856 in what is today Croatia. He became a naturalized American citizen and an inventor. Personally his demeanor was strict and regimented. He curled his toes exactly 100 times every night. He claimed it heightened his brain stimuli connection between body and mind.

He was known to be critical of his working staff’s appearance, even sending a girl home once to change clothes. You can imagine then that by being in a cramped office with Tesla, the overweight did not fair well. In fact he once fired his secretary for being fat. To understand his actions one must first understand the man.

American Dream

At the end of his life Tesla had hundreds of patents and more that he never had the chance to register. He possibly noticed some minor flaws in some of his works that detracted from the grandiosity of his inventions that he otherwise registered in order to make a profit.

Tesla emigrate to the Unites States in 1884 to New York City. There he invented many things that were beyond his own time. These inventions offered a rare glimpse into the future made possible by progress in the fields of physics and engineering. One such invention was a remote-controlled boat.

Experiments

Tesla’s experiments supposedly came out of ideas that appeared to him in the form of pictures in his mind. He imagined suddenly the designs of new inventions in vivid and detailed mental imagery.

He basically invented Xray technology accidentally when experimenting with Crooke’s tubes. Weeks later the inventor of X-ray imaging made the discovery but on purpose.

Tesla Tower

In 1901 Tesla received millions in funding for his new project. The new project was the Wardenclyffe tower, a tower to transmit broadcast signals wirelessly through electricity, across continents even. Tesla built the property, but before accomplishing his goal he was beaten by a rival inventor Guglielmo Marconi. Marconi’s radio transmission system was the first to broadcast a signal across the globe. Because of his defeat Tesla was not able to achieve further investment funding. The property was sold off in a foreclosure in 1915. Two years later the building was demolished.

Nikola Tesla

Tesla’s appearance was tall and slender. He was over six feet tall and less than two hundred pounds. He slept briefly at night, but admittedly he sometimes took naps to “recharge”.

His habits included feeding pigeons out of windows and in the park. He had a particular fascination and care for the animal. He spent money of his own and time to create a little pigeon brace system, because he found one of the birds with a hurt wing once.

Death

Tesla died in 1943, 86 years old in a room at the New Yorker hotel. A maid found his body days after he died. The “Do Not Disturb” sign kept his body undisturbed.

His life and brilliance inspired and is honored today. The electric car company is named after him.

…Tesla once fired his secretary for being fat.
